In God's Trust

Donald Trump - Who Do You Say That I Am

When a Columnist, Cal Thomas, recently asked Donald Trump the question, “Who do you say Jesus is,” he responded by saying that Christ is someone he can “rely on.”  He then went on to say,  “Jesus to me is somebody I can think about for security and confidence.”  “Somebody I can revere in terms of bravery and in terms of courage and, because I consider the Christian religion so important, somebody I can totally rely on in my own mind.”

Mr. Thomas then asked Trump, “You have said you never felt the need to ask for God’s forgiveness, and yet repentance for one’s sins is a precondition to salvation.”  Thomas then followed with, “I ask you the question Jesus asked of Peter: Who do you say He is?”

Trump responded, “I will be asking for forgiveness, but hopefully I won’t have to be asking for much forgiveness. As you know, I am Presbyterian and Protestant. I’ve had great relationships and developed even greater relationships with ministers.”

In Donald’s defense, if he does not understand what sin is and the awful sacrifice Jesus paid for it as well as the reason why, then his response to those questions is quite understandable.  The problem is, we must be aware that politicians will try to use what appeals most to the heartstrings of whatever group he is speaking to as a means to gain their trust, even to the point of deception.

The Bible tells us that we will know a person’s true character when we hold their actions and words up against the light of God’s Word.  I am just not at all comfortable with how Trump attempts to attract Christians.  He obviously tailor makes his speeches to appeal to whatever audience he is speaking to and while this is always done by every candidate, his attempts to speak of Christianity and Christian principals fall far short of true fundamental Christian values.  His responses to such questioning continually show his actual ignorance of the subject of Christianity.

I am also even more uncomfortable with how many Christians wholeheartedly support and buy into his rhetoric.  Donald’s apparent ignorance of Christianity should not justify our own ignorance and tolerance of his tactics.  When Donald stands up in front of Christian groups and states repeatedly that many evangelicals support him or when he holds up his mother’s Bible and talks about how much it means to him, he knows full well that these types of statements appeal to a Christian’s inherent sensitivities.  Therefore a bond is built between them to the point that many believe that he is actually a Christian - or are at the very least extremely hopeful.  Yet, if he were, his response to the question that Jesus asked of his disciples, “Who do you say that I am,” should have mirrored much closer the response by Peter – “Thou art the Christ.”  Instead, Trump, as always, plays around with words but never quite comes close to getting it right.

Trump has absolutely no idea the depth of Jesus Christ’s love for him that he died on the cross for his sins.  Donald needs to actually realize that he is a sinner in the eyes of a holy and completely righteous God – that he has sinned against God and broken His commandments.  When and if he does, he will then understand the need to ask Jesus’ forgiveness and turn away from what God calls sin determining to follow Him where He leads.

If indeed had Donald ever accepted Christ as his Savior then I am certain that his answer to Cal Thomas' question, “Who do you say He is” would have fallen more in line with a true biblical response – “Thou are the Christ.”

In my words - He is the Christ, the Son of God the Father, the Savior of the world, the Sacrificial Lamb, my Savior, my Redeemer, my Risen Lord, my Hope, ……….. my Everything.

(Note: My criticism of Trump does not mean that I am a supporter of Clinton.  I steadfastly oppose her as President of the United States.  I also encourage all to pray and vote.  When it comes down to election day, I know that we may have no other choice but to vote for the best of two evils, but we must still vote.  If you must vote for Trump, or Clinton for that matter, do so with the understanding that we are probably, at this point in time, just electing what we deserve as a nation that has fallen so far away from God’s standards.)
